Bringing you the news before 5am even - blackout at shopping malls/fire

Could this explain the blackout at KLCC and other several other malls within the Golden Triangle?

The smell of cooked Shish Kebabs. It was around eight or so. I figured Tarbush (Lebanese restaurant) must have had something overcooked at the kitchen. The lights went out just a few seconds earlier. It came back on, but Lot 10 just across from where I sat, the lights didn't come back on. It was so until 8.20 when we left, feeling full.

By that time, there were people looking up at the sky. White smoke with a reddish painted sky above. Only in less than a few minutes from that time, the fire engines were on the scene turning white smoke to black, with their hoses.

Fire breakout

The hotel directly opposite Tenaga National building was almost vaguely to be seen if not for the room lights to mark its presence. People crowded to see this out of the ordinary spectacle. Many were Indonesians.

The police and fire department were very quick to arrive on the scene. They managed to handle the situation very well. I was indeed impressed.

Berjaya Times Square and the Monorail were still in operation. By nine, Lot 10 was closed. So were the other shops around its vicinity.

The crowd's coming in

But at the back alleys of Jalan Walter Grenier was a whole different scene. The crowd was bigger there. Two fire engines. The main entrance of Tenaga National Berhad opened to a world of orange flames. Black smoke rose to the sky. It was thick like black foam being squirted to the heavens.

I asked what had happened. A lady just said smoke was coming out of Lot 10. I didn't just buy that, though the lights were out and people were slowly leaving the building. Even though the lights were out, there were some who still sat and enjoyed their coffee.

Notice the darkness surrounding the mall

The air - reminded me of a grand shish kebab festival. Nonetheless, the flames that were inside the building told me a different story altogether. I rushed over to the back alleys and found myself with many people, whose faces are momentary in darkness with flashing spruts of blue, red and yellow. One Indonesian man with his wife told me the fire had been going on for half an hour (8.35) and that he heard an explosion ("saya dengar satu letupan").

From afar

I tried to make a phone call. By then, I knew Maxis 012 was out. I couldn't call. I couldn't even check my credit balance. It was times like these that probably DiGi had an advantage. I feared it might've been a terrorist attack. God only knows we have had too many. Malaysia is just too safe to be raped of its sanctity.

The fury flames

It just became an unusual night. People were not afraid as much as being overly curious. By nine, everything now would probably be on the front pages of the Star, Sun or maybe if any on-the-scene photographers and reporters get back in time - it might eventually be on the twelve o'clock news
